Sexual Predators

Sex offenders skyrocket the charts in the 1990's. Some people believe that children are more prone to sexual abuse and molestation. It is common for child molesters to target young children, because they may have experienced a cycle of abuse themselves.
Sexual predators are evaluated and treated in hopes to stop their deviant behavior. Sex crimes include: pornography, sexual abuse, child sex, child kidnapping, and trafficking. After incarceration for such offenses, convicted sex offenders are required to register as a sex offender and are subject to a range of identification and surveillance strategies; these laws are referred to as "Megan's Laws" (pp.202). Criminal history of registered sex offenders is available to the public via Internet.
The states do not take sex offenders lightly. As parents, we try our best to limit the amount of Internet our children use, television, and any other forms of entertainment to decrease the level of access of sexual predators. I can only imagine a four year old trying to tell their parents that they are a victim of sexual abuse. Is it possible for every sex offender to adjust back to society after being released, knowing they now where a label, and have certain restrictions?

  1. You ask the question, is it possible for every sex offender to adjust back to society after being released, knowing they now where a label, and have certain restrictions? In my opinion the answer is no. I say no because we will not let them. They have to register and once we find out that they are a sex offender we don’t want them in our neighborhoods. If they are allowed to stay in the neighborhood. We constantly watch them and they get blamed for any incident involving a child. I don’t know if they can be rehabilitated and made to change their evil ways. However, I think that making them register and having them displayed a sex offender lives here banner has a negative impact on society. I view this as a negative impact because it makes the neighborhood focus on that one house when there can be someone else lurking in the dark at some other house in the neighborhood.

    1. Victor, although I agree with you that once we find out that an individual is listed as a sex offender then we will judge them and want to kick them out of our neighborhoods but who's to say people can't change? Yes, a person can be stuck in their ways but it takes time to change.

  2. Sometimes there are people classified as sex offenders when they are actually in a boyfriend/girlfriend situation, An example would be a 19 year old boy and a 15 year old girl. Does it make a difference then? I think maybe it does. A case I specifically remember coming before the court I was in when a man was trying to get his case expunged from the records was one in which he was convicted of a sex offense when he was younger and he ended up marrying the girl when she was 18. They had children together. He had no other convictions. Her parents didn't like him and were angry about the relationship, so the parents had him arrested. That conviction followed him where ever he went.
Also, Florida is just one of many states that now makes juveniles above the age of 14 under certain circumstances registered sex offenders. In my opinion, I agree with Mr. Bernard that we have a specific outlook of sex offenders and they are unwelcome.

  3. You are right Christina. There are certain cases in which an individual has false accusations placed on them as a sex offender. If the two parties were indeed a couple that situation is messy.

  4. Most of all Sex Offenders know their victim or victims being that half of the cases that have been reported, the offender was a family member. Sex Offenders usually and most of the time choose victims that are the same race as themselves. They tend to use deception and enticement to be able to offend the victim. Sex offenders are of both gender meaning male and female although the most cases that have been reported are male offenders. Sexual Predators are attracted to adults in a sexual way therefore we should not assume that an adult that has a relationship with another adult does not prey on children. The most common motivations for a predator is power, control, and anger. This leaves sexual gratification not often being the motivation. An offender wanting to change their ways is not enough to be able to stop. While drugs and alcohol are often involved in sexual assault, it is NOT the cause of the assault. There is NO CURE that has been recognized for the "compulsions" that many sex offenders say they experience that lead into an assault. Sexual predators are likely to reoffend.

  5. Bianca: You have written a good blog on a controversial subject. I am interested in reading your answer to the question that you raised within the blog itself, although it appears that you touched upon your answer to the question in your response to Victor's comment. Professor Taylor

  6. No Bianca I don't think it is possible for every sexual predator to adjust back into society. However, I do believe in the power of Jesus and through faith and prayer anything it is possible. With that said, depending on the degree of the crime you may see a few. As you know through your reading, there are several ways in which you can be classified as a sexual predator. Good job, your blog was informative.
